As in most affluent nations, Qatar produces large quantities of waste and is developing strategies to dramatically curb waste production. The proposals in the National Development Strategy 2011-2016 will set Qatar on a course to dramatically reduce the amount of waste going to landfills by greatly increasing recycling efforts and improve waste management efforts. Considering the country's limited resources, increased recycling and converting waste to energy are pillars of the strategy.
Qatar produces more than 7,000 tons of solid waste every day. Currently, households are responsible for about 30% of that waste, while commerce, industry, and construction account for the rest. The vast majority of that non-domestic waste today goes directly to the landfill. The waste strategy will cover waste from households, the construction industry, and industrial and commercial sectors. It will focus on two primary goals:
